Water Usage on a Charter Boat

Water usage on a boat needs to have everyone's attention to it. The issue created with no fresh water is that you'll incur costs to fill your tanks in both time and money. You'll also have to dock, and depending on location you may find yourself waiting.

How Much Water Do You Have?

Most charter catamarans have 100โ€“200 gallons of fresh water. For a crew of 4โ€“6 people over a week, this is sufficient if used carefully. If you're profligate with water, you'll run out.

Water Conservation Tips

  • Showers: Take navy showers โ€” wet yourself, turn off the water, soap up, turn on the water to rinse. A proper navy shower uses less than 2 gallons
  • Dishes: Use the two-basin method described in our dishes article
  • Teeth brushing: Turn off the tap while brushing
  • Cooking: Use seawater for boiling pasta and vegetables (rinse with fresh water)
  • Laundry: Don't do laundry on board โ€” use a laundry service ashore

Filling Up

If you do run low on water, you can fill up at most marinas. The cost is typically $0.10โ€“$0.20 per gallon. The bigger issue is the time it takes to find a marina, dock, and fill up.

Watermakers

Some charter boats are equipped with watermakers (reverse osmosis systems) that can produce fresh water from seawater. If your boat has one, learn how to use it before you leave the dock.
