Trash Management on a Charter Boat

Believe it or not trash and how to handle it can be a large friction point. First, it should go without saying, that trash should never be disposed of in the ocean. Many people feel it is okay to throw certain items overboard — it is not.

Believe it or not trash and how to handle it can be a large friction point.

First, it should go without saying, that trash should never be disposed of in the ocean. Many people feel it is okay to throw certain items overboard — it is not.

The Rule: Nothing Overboard

This is non-negotiable. Not food scraps, not biodegradable items, not anything. The ocean is not a trash can, and the BVI has strict environmental regulations. Violations can result in significant fines.

Managing Trash on Board

  • Designate a specific location for trash on the boat
  • Use separate bags for recyclables and non-recyclables
  • Compact trash regularly to save space
  • Dispose of trash at marinas and designated shore facilities

Reducing Trash

  • Buy provisions in bulk to reduce packaging
  • Bring reusable bags, water bottles, and containers
  • Avoid single-use plastics
  • Choose products with minimal packaging

Recycling in the BVI

The BVI has limited recycling infrastructure, but many marinas have recycling bins for glass, aluminum, and plastic. Make the effort to sort your recyclables.

The Bigger Picture

The BVI's economy depends on its natural beauty. Every piece of trash that ends up in the ocean or on a beach degrades the experience for future visitors and harms the marine ecosystem. As visitors, we have a responsibility to leave the BVI as beautiful as we found it.
