The Basics to Be Aware Of

Here are some tips to protect yourself from the elements when visiting the British Virgin Islands. Each of these represents a key area that first-time and experienced charterers alike should understand before setting sail.

Here are some tips to protect yourself from the elements when visiting the British Virgin Islands.

Sun

The Caribbean sun is significantly more intense than what most visitors are used to. UV radiation is higher at lower latitudes, and the reflection off the water amplifies the effect. Use SPF 50+ sunscreen, wear a hat, and cover up during the peak hours of 10 AMโ€“2 PM.

Heat and Hydration

Dehydration is a real risk in the BVI. The combination of heat, humidity, and physical activity (sailing, swimming, hiking) means you need to drink significantly more water than usual. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least 3 liters of water per day.

Alcohol

Many people drink more alcohol on vacation than they do at home. In the heat of the Caribbean, alcohol dehydrates you faster. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water, and be aware that alcohol impairs your judgment and coordination โ€” both of which are important on a boat.

Foot Care

Coral cuts and sea urchin spines are common injuries in the BVI. Always wear water shoes on rocky beaches and be careful when snorkeling near coral. Treat any cuts promptly to prevent infection.

Medications

Bring any prescription medications you need, plus a good supply of over-the-counter medications: - Seasickness medication - Antihistamines (for jellyfish stings and allergic reactions) - Pain relievers - Antidiarrheal medication - Antibiotic ointment for cuts
