Jellyfish in the BVI โ€” What to Know

Be sure to bring vinegar and Benadryl on your trip! What the pictures of the beautiful blue waters don't show you are the jellyfish you'll encounter. Jellyfish have no eyes and seem to aimlessly move around. The key is to be aware of your surroundings.

Types of Jellyfish in the BVI

The BVI waters are home to several types of jellyfish: - Moon jellyfish: Common and relatively harmless, though they can cause mild irritation - Portuguese Man-of-War: Not technically a jellyfish, but often mistaken for one. Their tentacles can cause severe stings and should be avoided - Box jellyfish: Less common but potentially dangerous

What to Do If Stung

  • . Get out of the water immediately
  • . Do NOT rub the sting โ€” this can make it worse
  • . Remove any visible tentacles with a credit card or stick (not your fingers)
  • . Pour vinegar over the sting to neutralize the venom
  • . Take an antihistamine (Benadryl) to reduce swelling
  • . Seek medical attention if the sting is severe or if you have an allergic reaction

Prevention

  • Wear a rash guard when snorkeling
  • Be aware of jellyfish in the water before jumping in
  • Avoid swimming after storms, when jellyfish are more common
  • If you see a Portuguese Man-of-War on the beach, stay well clear โ€” their tentacles can still sting even when dead
