The Head (Toilet) on a Charter Boat

By heads we mean toilet. The head on a boat is not like your toilet at home, or even in an RV. Things going wrong with the head have been the core of some ruined trips. Most heads now do not have a manual pump handle to literally suck the waste out.

How Boat Heads Work

Most modern charter boats have electric flush heads. These are more reliable than the old manual pump heads, but they still require careful use.

The Golden Rules

  • . Nothing goes in the head that didn't go through your body first โ€” no paper towels, no feminine hygiene products, no "flushable" wipes
  • . Use the minimum amount of toilet paper โ€” or better yet, use a separate trash bin for toilet paper
  • . Flush properly โ€” follow the instructions specific to your boat's head system
  • . Report problems immediately โ€” a blocked head that gets ignored becomes a much bigger problem

What to Do if the Head Blocks

  • . Stop using it immediately
  • . Inform the skipper or charter company
  • . Do not attempt to fix it yourself unless you know what you're doing
  • . Use the other head on the boat (most catamarans have two)

Holding Tanks

The BVI has strict no-discharge zones in many anchorages. Your charter boat will have a holding tank for sewage. The charter company will explain how to use it during your briefing.
