Cleanliness on a Charter Boat

As if dishes and trash weren't enough, yes, overall cleanliness on a boat is something you will not be able to hide from anyone or anyone from you. This is also a habit-based attitude that is hard to adjust.

As if dishes and trash weren't enough, yes, overall cleanliness on a boat is something you will not be able to hide from anyone or anyone from you.

This is also a habit-based attitude that is hard to adjust.

The Challenge of Small Spaces

A charter boat is a very small living space shared by multiple people. There is nowhere to hide mess, and clutter accumulates quickly. What might be acceptable in a large house becomes intolerable on a 45-foot boat.

Daily Cleaning Routine

Establish a daily cleaning routine: - Morning: Wipe down cockpit table and surfaces - After meals: Wash dishes immediately, wipe down galley - Evening: Tidy the cabin, put away any items left out - Weekly: Clean the head, mop the cabin sole

Personal Space

Respect your crewmates' personal space. Keep your gear in your designated storage area. Don't leave personal items in common areas.

The Head

The head (toilet) requires special attention. See our dedicated article on head etiquette for details.

Setting Expectations

Before the charter, have an honest conversation with your crew about cleanliness standards. What's acceptable to one person may be unacceptable to another. Better to address this before you leave the dock than to have a conflict mid-charter.
