Heat & Humidity in the BVI

In the name of knowing what to expect, you can expect heat. You can expect humidity above 70% and you can expect that makes you sweaty and sticky. Yes, with more heat and sweating you'll break out more, get more zits and find it harder to not stink. Don't let this be a deterrent.

Yes, with more heat and sweating you'll break out more, get more zits and find it harder to not stink. Don't let this be a deterrent. The beauty and fun of the BVI far outweigh the discomfort of the heat.

Temperature Ranges

The BVI enjoys a tropical climate year-round. Temperatures typically range from 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C). The trade winds provide some relief, but when you're in a protected anchorage with no wind, it can feel significantly hotter.

Staying Cool

  • Stay hydrated — drink more water than you think you need
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Take advantage of the water — swimming is the best air conditioning
  • Use shade strategically — the cockpit awning is your friend
  • Schedule strenuous activities for the morning or evening

Sun Protection

The Caribbean sun is intense. Use reef-safe sunscreen with SPF 50+ and reapply frequently. Wear a hat and UV-protective clothing. Sunburn can ruin a charter faster than almost anything else.

Acclimatization

If you're coming from a cold climate, give yourself a day or two to acclimatize before doing strenuous activities. Your body needs time to adjust to the heat and humidity.
