One of the biggest things overlooked when going to the British Virgin Islands is that you are ON THE OCEAN. Always respect the fact you will be living on a boat on the largest, most powerful force on earth. The ocean is beautiful, fun and a great place to be. But it is also unforgiving when you don't respect it.

Respect the Weather

The BVI sits in the Caribbean trade wind belt, which means you can expect consistent easterly winds of 15–25 knots for most of the year. These winds make for excellent sailing, but they also mean that conditions can change quickly. Always check the weather forecast before heading out, and don't be afraid to change your plans if conditions deteriorate.

Know Your Boat

Before you leave the marina, make sure you know where all the safety equipment is located. Life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers, first aid kit, VHF radio — know where they are and how to use them. The charter company will give you a briefing, but don't be afraid to ask questions.

Respect the Reef

The BVI has some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the Caribbean. These reefs are fragile ecosystems that take decades to grow. Never anchor on a reef, always use the mooring balls provided, and be careful when snorkeling not to touch or stand on coral.

The Ocean is Not a Trash Can

It should go without saying, but nothing should be thrown overboard. Not food scraps, not plastic, not anything. The ocean is a shared resource that we all have a responsibility to protect.
