Have you ever glanced at the mirror-like surface of an azure ocean and wondered what enigmatic wonders lie beneath?

As you prepare for your bare boat charter voyage, we invite you to explore the fascinating world of barracuda in the BVI.

The Great Barracuda

The great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is one of the most commonly encountered large fish in the BVI. They can grow up to 6 feet long and are easily recognizable by their elongated body, large mouth, and sharp teeth.

Are They Dangerous?

Barracuda attacks on humans are rare. When they do occur, they are usually the result of mistaken identity โ€” the barracuda mistakes a shiny piece of jewelry for a small fish. To minimize risk: - Remove shiny jewelry before snorkeling - Don't spearfish near barracuda - Don't corner or harass them - Give them space

Barracuda Behavior

Barracuda are curious fish. They will often follow snorkelers and divers, maintaining a respectful distance. This can be unnerving, but it's generally not threatening. They're checking you out, not stalking you.

Ciguatera Poisoning

One important note: barracuda can carry ciguatera toxin, which causes ciguatera fish poisoning in humans. For this reason, it's not advisable to eat barracuda caught in the BVI. This is a real risk and should be taken seriously.

Enjoying the Encounter

Barracuda are magnificent creatures. If you encounter one while snorkeling, stay calm, maintain your distance, and enjoy the encounter. They are one of the many incredible marine animals you'll see in the BVI.
